Visual Studio 2019 - DevExpress Controls will not install in Toolbox

created 6 years ago

I downloaded and installed Visual Studio Professional on April 4, 2019.  VS 2019 is installed side-by-side with VS 2017.  The DevExpress 18.2.6 controls didn't show up in the VS 2019 toolbox.  I then installed DevExpress 18.2.7.  VS 2017 updated the toolbox.  VS 2019, the DevExpress controls are still missing from the toolbox.  From VS 2019 I then ran the DevExpress Repair Toolbox option.  The DevExpress controls are still missing from the toolbox.

Is there a fix for this?

    Hi Vince,

The issue is unexpected. I recommend you try Gosha's ToolboxAnalyzer tool from the How to resolve issues with Toolbox items KB article and if this doesn't help, provide me with your toolbox activity log. This will help me analyze the issue on my side. I look forward to your reply.

I ran the Toolbox Analyzer, created a new blank project, went and made a pot of coffee (because my hard drive was spinning and VS 2019's feedback/progress is uninformative), and when I came back the Toolbox was fixed.

    Thanks

        Hi Toji,

The version that you are using does not support Visual Studio 2019 because it was released prior to the Visual Studio 2019 release. Please refer to the IDE section of the Prerequisites help topic to learn what versions of DevExpress components support Visual Studio 2019.

            Hi Marina,

I've created a separate ticket on your behalf (T748311: Visual Studio 2019 - DevExpress WinForms Controls are missing in the toolbox when version 18.1 is used). It has been placed in our processing queue and will be answered shortly.

            Lest do like this:

            1. Open your visual studio
            2. Open your solution, for example in mine is mngpwn (it's windows form app)
            3. Set application target .net framework to .net 4.7 or above
            4. On opened solution in visual studio solution exploler, open the form. In mine is Form1.cs [Design],
            5. actived Toolbox, select General Tab,
            6. Restore down the visual studio windows
            7. Open windows explorer an go to folder of installed DexExpress dll file
            8. Restore down the window exploler
            9. select view as Detail View and then sort view by Type file
            10. Go to window exploler, select the .dll stored. In mine is in C:\Program Files (x86)\DevExpress 13.2\Components\Bin\Framework,
            11. Drag to general tab on toolbox,
            12. Wait a momen. When appear the dialog window, click Ok,
            13. Rename the general tab in tooolbox as you want,
            14. Make new tab and move the group of DevExpress Component you want to group,
            15. Done!
            16. You now can use all of DevExpress component.
            17. Do the same for web component in web solution type.

                Good morning everyone,

I did some tests and found a way to solve the compatibility issues of devexpress 16.2 with VS 2019.

To display the components in the toolbox, just click on any of the groups and select the option 'Choose items …'> '.Net Framework components'> Filter by DevExpress and select all necessary components.!

                Step 1:

                Step 2:

                Hope this helps.

Thank you for sharing your solution with us. I believe it may help other customers who face a similar issue. However, please note that we can't guarantee that this workaround will work in all possible scenarios.

FYI. I am using DevExpress 18.2. The DevExpress toolbox shows up in VS2017.
I installed VS2019 and the DevExpress toolbox isn't available > "Repair Toolbox" completed but it doesn't show up in the Toolbox. I did a "Reset Toolbox" and it shows up.
