To overcome this exception, I suggest you clean your project by removing the Bin and Obj folders from your project folder and then rebuild your project again.
Now it all should work as expected.
Please try this and let me know your results.

I happened when selecting the project template - the one that I need is the Scheduling Application.
The selected elements/objects for the form are not initialized/added/loaded properly.
If I can find a project template to be downloaded from your site, it will be good.

I was unable to reproduce this issue. On my side, the designer is opened without any issues.
Did you try to remove the Bin and Obj folders from your project folder and then rebuild your project again? What results did you see?
Alternatively, I suggest you follow steps described in the Troubleshooting design-time problems KB article.
If nothing helps, would you please send the generated project to us so we can investigate it further?

Nevertheless, we'd like to help you to overcome this behavior. I think this issue also can take place if something is incorrectly or incompletely generated on your side. If you have a chance to return to this issue, would you please send the problematic project which is generated on your side to us so we could research it?
